Jewelry entrepreneur Jerry Winston dies

Jerome "Jerry" Winston, international jewelry entrepreneur, passed away on July 28. He was 82.

Winston began his career in jewelry as a teenager working summers for his uncle, the late Harry Winston, at which time he developed a passion for the diamond and jewelry industry.

After serving in World War II and surviving the Battle of the Bulge, Winston was decorated with a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star. Following his military service, Winston attended Cornell University, graduating with a degree in economics from 1947 through 1970, and again from 1975 through 1982. Under his uncle's tutelage, Winston developed business relationships with some of the largest jewelry chains and manufacturers. He served as executive vice president and director of the Harry Winston firm, and also had a private celebrity clientele. Winston left the company shortly after his uncle's death.

Jerry Winston's 50-year career in the jewelry industry also included executive positions with M. Fabrikant & Sons, Feature Ring Co. and Lazare Kaplan, Inc. He formed his own corporation, Jerry Winston Enterprises Ltd, with his wife, Sylvia, in 1985. These subsequent retail and international wholesale diamond and jewelry business mirrored the work he had had done for Harry Winston, Inc., but also sent Winston around the world on international buying trips.

At the time of his death, Winston was the second-longest tenure member on record of the 24 Karat Club of New York. He was also a past member of the 24 Karat Club of Dallas, Golden Roosters of Chicago and a past board member at Samuels Jewelers.
