entrepreneur Jerry Winston dies
Jerome "Jerry" Winston,
international jewelry entrepreneur, passed away on July 28. He
was 82.
Winston began his career in jewelry as a teenager working
summers for his uncle, the late Harry Winston, at which time he
developed a passion for the diamond and jewelry industry.
After serving in World War II and surviving the Battle of the
Bulge, Winston was decorated with a Purple Heart and a Bronze
Star. Following his military service, Winston attended Cornell
University, graduating with a degree in economics from 1947
through 1970, and again from 1975 through 1982. Under his
uncle's tutelage, Winston developed business relationships with
some of the largest jewelry chains and manufacturers. He served
as executive vice president and director of the Harry Winston
firm, and also had a private celebrity clientele. Winston left
the company shortly after his uncle's death.
Jerry Winston's 50-year career in the jewelry industry also
included executive positions with M. Fabrikant & Sons, Feature
Ring Co. and Lazare Kaplan, Inc. He formed his own corporation,
Jerry Winston Enterprises Ltd, with his wife, Sylvia, in 1985.
These subsequent retail and international wholesale diamond and
jewelry business mirrored the work he had had done for Harry
Winston, Inc., but also sent Winston around the world on
international buying trips.
At the time of his death, Winston was the second-longest tenure
member on record of the 24 Karat Club of New York. He was also a
past member of the 24 Karat Club of Dallas, Golden Roosters of
Chicago and a past board member at Samuels Jewelers.
