When buying a diamond, there are several ways to compare and contrast different options you may have.  The average person looking for a diamond engagement looks at about 150 different ones before making their decision. 

Once again, we focus on the 4 "C's":  Carat, Cut, Color, Clarity.  Since the average person will have a difficult time learning how to appraise the diamond properly, make sure you consult with an independent consultant and not the individual or jeweler you are purchasing the diamond from.

Another very important part of purchasing a diamond is to make sure that it comes with a diamond certificate which lists the 4 "C's."  There are four independent appraisal agencies that will provide the diamond certification:  GIA, AGS, IGI and EGL
