Cut
The cut of a
diamond refers to the dimensions of a diamond. A diamonds
brilliance and beauty is shown when a diamond is cut to the
proper dimensions allowing light to travel through and reflect.
This is different from the shape of the diamond. The cut of a
diamond can affect the its weight. A diamond cut too deep may be
larger in size, but have a smaller carat weight. A diamond cut
too shallow maybe small in size, but have a higher carat weight.
When a stone
is properly cut, its reflection will allow for the proper
reversal of light from the point where the diamond has been
cut. The path of light must be cut by the diamond cutter
inconsideration to the proper proportions.
→
Deep Cut
If the cut of a diamond is
too deep, light is reflected at the wrong angle and is emitted
back up.
→
Shallow Cut
If the cut of
a diamond is too shallow, light passes through the stone
without being reflected
→
Proportional Cut
Many diamond
cutters often do not provide proportional cuts to diamonds
because they seek to get the maximum weight from the rough
diamond which provides a higher weight and therefore a higher
price. This practice is common in the marketplace today
which tends to increase the cost of the diamond even though
its not a proportional cut. Make sure to seek the help
of an independent consultant when making your purchase.
